Why I built it.
On my birthday in 2021 I spent €7,000 on a high-end portable music player and two pairs of headphones. I hoped to experience auditory bliss but soon realized that something was missing. Where was that palpable sense of space and dynamics that I remembered when I first experienced high-end audio?
Then I wondered: what if it isn’t the equipment?
An online hearing test helped me to understand what my ears were missing. I used an equalizer to adjust the sound, pressed play, and heard details I hadn’t noticed in years — the shimmer of cymbals, the breath in a singer’s voice. I was overjoyed. But the joy didn’t last: what was at first a revelation soon sounded harsh and one-dimensional.
That discovery was the beginning. Bringing back detail was one thing; making it feel balanced and musical took years of learning and listening. I learned, the hard way, that an equalizer is simply not enough.
Elephant Ears is the result of that journey of discovery and my sincere hope is that it will give you a simple way to tune your music to your hearing and to hear what you have been missing.
