FAQ

A few things you might be wondering.

Why can familiar music seem to lose some of its detail?

As we age, our ears can become less sensitive to the higher frequencies that give music its presence and fine detail, even while everyday conversation still sounds clear. The change can be gradual. Elephant Ears is designed to lift that veil. Try the listening demo and decide whether it makes a difference for you.

How is Elephant Ears different from an equalizer?

An equalizer changes the level of frequency ranges. Elephant Ears also uses a hearing profile to shape quieter and louder sounds differently across frequency bands. Headphone tuning and your own equalizer adjustments let you shape the sound further. Edward's story explains how he arrived at this approach.

Why I built it

Do I need new headphones or speakers?

Try the demo with the headphones or high-quality speakers you already use. The app tour shows how you can select a hearing profile, tune your headphones, and choose or create an equalizer preset.

Which computers is it for?

Elephant Ears is a desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux and is currently in private beta. Apply for the beta to discuss your setup.

Does it work with my usual music apps?

Elephant Ears processes audio routed through its virtual audio device and sends it to your selected output. Apps with their own output-device selection may need a separate setting. The exact setup depends on your computer and music app.

Can it personalize the left and right sides separately?

With headphones, a hearing profile can personalize the left and right channels separately. Speakers do not deliver one channel exclusively to each ear.

Can I use an existing audiogram?

You can enter an existing audiogram manually or import supported JSON. PDF, image and CSV import are not supported. You can also use the guided listening check to create a profile based on your own hearing.

Does my music leave my computer?

Audio is processed on your computer. Beta sign-in and hearing or headphone profile generation use an internet connection. This does not mean the beta works indefinitely offline. The privacy policy explains how data is handled.

Is it intended to diagnose or treat hearing conditions?

Elephant Ears is an audio personalization tool and is not intended to diagnose or treat hearing conditions.

How do I join the beta, and what does it cost?

You can apply from “About the beta.” That section explains free beta participation, the commitments for a lifetime license, and planned launch pricing. Places are limited, and Edward reads every application. Read the beta terms for the full details.

Can I wait until launch instead of joining the beta?
